Swimming at public beaches is an increasingly popular activity among Canadians. Poor recreational water quality increases the risk of acute gastrointestinal illness, as well as other illnesses, among beachgoers. Understanding the environmental causes associated with beach water quality as well as the burden of recreational water illness can help inform beach monitoring programs and contribute to improved public health. Our research team aims to address through various research activities.
Research Activities
Identify predictors of poor water quality
Investigate which environmental factors are associated with high E. coli levels at participating beaches across Canada.
|
Develop predictive models
Real-time models for predicting water quality at beaches. Bayesian network models currently in development.
|
The Canadian Beach Cohort Study
Identify the burden of recreational water illness among Canadian beachgoers.
